MATEO

Mateo is a very sweet and gentle dog who is healing very well and ready for his forever family. As of March 25, 2022, he is 1 year old and weighs 10kg. He has been treated for ticks, fleas and worms and will soon be neutered and vaccinated.

He does well off and on leash, and in the car. He behaves well with other animals and children.

Mateo was rescued by one of our partner rescuers Layla.

“I first saw Mateo on the way to the coast just before Pochutla in early December 2021. He was extremely thin with far progressed mange. He was a skeleton with open wounds. He was very afraid and defensive and would not let us catch him. All I could do was bring back Bravecto and ask the nearby comedor woman to try to give him the medicine whenever he came close. A month later in late January I was on my way back to the coast and made a second attempt to catch Mateo. After an hour and several helping people we caught him and he came home to heal.

He responded so well to the antibiotics and treatments. His soft white fur began to grow back and he let humans touch him. While his skin and body are still sensitive he is very affectionate. Once he began coming on walks, he gained his confidence and strength. Now he is a very independent and calm dog who loves human touch and attention. He’s also very friendly with new people.

He is very respectful of the house. He is quite mature and less interested in toys but still playful and curious. He is quite submissive with humans but is very well socialized with other dogs and carries himself well. We are currently beginning to go into the city and while he is a bit nervous on busy streets, he is very comfortable in calmer areas. He follows off leash very well and is also leash trained.

He could be fine in a city or apartment and he is not very vocal. He does need a lot of walks with time to roam and explore. Mateo has made a strong recovery and is beginning to be ready for a home and family of his own.”
